Best Historic Stays: Casa Marina Resort in Key West
For over a century, Casa Marina Resort has embodied the heart and soul of Key West. Its timeless charm has been revitalized following a stunning $80 million renovation completed in 2024, making it more alluring than ever. Trust me, it’s a stay I will never forget, and I know it will leave a long-lasting impression on you as well.
The History of Casa Marina
The story of Casa Marina began with a promise from American railroad tycoon Henry Flagler in 1912. He pledged to build a luxury resort hotel once his ambitious Overseas Railroad, connecting Key West to the Florida mainland, was complete.
Unfortunately, Flagler passed away in 1913 at the age of 83 without seeing his dream realized. Nevertheless, construction began in 1918 under the leadership of his trusted aide, Louis P. Schutt.
Designed in the elegant Spanish architectural style, Casa Marina incorporates subtle nods to Flagler’s railroad roots.
“The archways in the original building were meant to mirror the bridges on the way down,” explained Evelyn Summer, Casa Marina’s Resort Manager.
The hotel opened on New Year’s Eve in 1920 and quickly became a hotspot for the elite. In fact, just three days after opening, President Warren G. Harding paid a visit. Over the decades, athletes, actors, authors, and politicians have all spent time at Casa Marina.
And of course, Ernest Hemingway frequented the hotel during his time in Key West. Casa Marina even appears in some of his work, a legacy the resort continues to honor today.
Casa Marina Resort Today
Today, Casa Marina comprises three buildings, including the original structure and two wings added in the 1980s.
In spring 2024, the resort went through an extensive $80 million renovation and is now part of the Curio Collection by Hilton by Hilton. This update preserved the hotel’s historic charm while bringing a fresh, modern feel to the resort and its rooms.

“Now that they’ve added touches like the wood beams to draw from the original building, it’s really, really beautiful,” said Summer.
My stay in the Pool-Ocean View Queen Beds Suite was a highlight. The common space was the real showstopper, with a cozy L-shaped seating area, vibrant patterns, and funky decor. The living room opened up to a balcony overlooking the resort and ocean.
“Guests who have been coming for years are blown away by the renovations,” Summer noted.
The resort has the largest private beach in Key West, two heated pools, two piers, a fitness center, and more.
Dining at Casa Marina Resort
Dining at Casa Marina is an experience in itself. For breakfast, guests can enjoy Flagler’s Restaurant, located in the historic Flagler Ballroom or on the outdoor patio.
For a quick caffeine fix and fresh pastries, Morrison’s Market is the go-to spot. It’s also the perfect place to grab Casa Marina merchandise as a keepsake.
For lighter fare, head to The Canary Room, inspired by Hemingway’s short story, “A Canary for One.” This charming spot features hand-painted murals and original curved ceilings. Don’t miss the Margarita Royale, a blend of Don Julio Blanco Tequila, Cointreau, prickly pear, and Prosecco.
Lunch and dinner are a treat at Dorada Key West, the resort’s newest addition that has Baja-Med cuisine and gorgeous beachfront views.
To celebrate something really special, book Toes in the Sand, a private, six-course dining experience on the beach. My menu featured coconut soup, a market oyster trio, lobster ravioli, short rib “cigars,” oven-roasted lamb, and choco flan.
Exploring Key West from Casa Marina Resort
Beyond the beach and pools, Casa Marina offers a variety of amenities. The Spa al Mare has massages, facials, and aromatherapy sessions.
Exploring Key West is a breeze with the Old Town Trolley Tour stop conveniently located at the resort. You can also rent a bike onsite, whether for a few hours or a few days.
For water adventures, Barefoot Billy’s Watersports is right at your doorstep. I took their 90-minute jet ski tour around the island, and it was an exciting way to see Key West from the water. You can also rent kayaks and paddle boards for a more relaxing paddle.
