A Seafood Lover’s Guide to Historic Cortez Fishing Village

If you’re craving fresh seafood and Old Florida charm, make your way to Cortez Historic Fishing Village, about an hour south of Tampa and minutes from Anna Maria Island. It’s home to some seriously good eats! Here are three places you shouldn’t miss.

Star Fish Company

Star Fish Company is a local institution in Cortez. You’ll often find a line, but it moves quickly and is absolutely worth the wait.

You’ll place your order at the counter, grab a seat at one of the picnic tables overlooking Sarasota Bay, and wait for your name to be called. the staff brings your food right to you!

The Cortez Fish Chowder is a must, and the grouper are popular orders. Just keep in mind: it’s cash only, but there’s an ATM on-site if you need it.

Swordfish Grill & Tiki Bar

Tucked beneath a massive tiki hut with waterfront views, Swordfish Grill & Tiki Bar is a laid-back spot that’s perfect for lunch or dinner. The shade from the tiki really comes in handy on hot summer days and the views of the water are fantastic (I saw dolphins!). Plus, there’s often live music.

The menu is full of local favorites like the Seafood Platter and Shrimp & Grits, but I went with the Pompano and it was outstanding.

Tide Tables Restaurant & Marina

If you’re looking for a true Old Florida experience, Tide Tables Restaurant & Marina is the place. This casual, waterfront spot is known for its fresh seafood, laid-back vibe, and a sign out front that proudly reads: “Where Locals Eat.”

That sign doesn’t lie. Seating is shared, so you might find yourself swapping stories with nearby diners. It’s a fun way to meet locals and fellow travelers while waiting on your order.

The Shrimp Tacos are a crowd favorite, but everything here is simple, fresh, and full of flavor. Your tastebuds will thank you!
