Here are five ways to make the most of a summer getaway around Eustis and Mount Dora.
1. Explore Trout Lake Nature Center in Eustis
Walk short, shaded paths with some fun surprises at Trout Lake Nature Center in Eustis. After stopping in the Education Building, head down the Haselton Trail to a boardwalk, which leads to a dock overlooking Trout Lake. Another highlight is the Adventure Trail, with a single-track boardwalk that leads to the Grandfather Oak Trail. The Grandfather Oak is believed to be more than 275 years old.
2. Have a sweet treat at Sunsational Farms in Umatilla
See the iconic Big Orange and grab a cool treat at Sunsational Farms in Umatilla. Order the creamsicle soft serve, Sunsational’s signature flavor made with orange juice. The strawberry shortcake is also a crowd favorite. While you’re there, browse the large Country Store filled with Florida-made wares and fresh produce. Don’t leave without snapping a photo in front of the Big Orange, a 14-foot-wide orange that’s been a landmark for decades.
3. Cool off at Alexander Springs Recreation Area in Altoona
Visit one of the best swimming holes in Ocala National Forest at Alexander Springs Recreation Area in Altoona. It’s a short walk from the parking lot to the crystal-clear, 72-degree water surrounded by beautiful trees. Bring a snorkel to look for small fish or a raft to truly relax in the spring. If you’d like to get some steps in, the short 0.9-mile Timucuan Trail is a great option.
4. Walk & shop downtown Mount Dora
Mount Dora is easily one of the most charming towns in Central Florida. It’s hard not to fall in love with its historic downtown, rolling hills, and lake views.
Snap a photo in front of the 35-foot Mount Dora Lighthouse, walk the peaceful trails at Palm Island Park, and check out the variety of shops downtown, like Walk in the Woods, and restaurants, like Pieces Rising and Gianni’s Italiano Restaurant.
