4 Cozy Florida Getaways to Enjoy in Winter and Beyond

Florida’s cooler months don’t last long, but they’re the perfect excuse for a cozy escape. From riverfront glamping to shipping-container rooms in a remote part of the Everglades, these four getaways highlight some of the most unique places to stay in Florida and still hold up well beyond winter.

Black Prong Resort near Williston

If you love luxury, nature, and horses, Black Prong Resort should absolutely be on your radar. Just 20 minutes outside of Williston in Levy County, this 90-acre, pet-friendly paradise is bordered by Goethe State Forest on three sides.

Guests can choose from cozy resort cabins, country cottages (some with stabling), and RV spaces. The on-site amenities really shine, including a large beach-entry pool with a separate hot tub. Dining at Black Prong Whiskey Bar and Grill is a must. The space is beautifully designed and brings the outdoors inside, and the small plates truly stand out. The whipped feta and house-made sweet potato ravioli are favorites for a reason.

The resort connects directly to Goethe State Forest’s equestrian and nature trails. If you don’t bring your own horse, one of the most fun ways to explore is by booking a trail ride with Black Prong Adventures. The one-hour Goethe Forest Trail Ride is among the most popular options and works well for all ages and skill levels. You’ll be paired with a trail horse and ride through longleaf pine forests, oak hammocks, and palmettos, a peaceful way to soak in Florida’s quieter side.

Peace River Oaks in Bowling Green

Glamp right along the Peace River at Peace River Oaks in Bowling Green, about 40 minutes south of Lakeland. This family-owned and operated glamping and RV destination has quickly become a favorite getaway for travelers who want to be outside without roughing it.

There are two tent layouts to choose from. The Lodge Premium Riverfront Glamping Tents sleep up to five people, while the newer Haven Premium Riverfront Glamping Tents feature one king bed and are ideal for couples or solo travelers. All tents include AC and heat, a microwave, fridge, coffee maker, Brio water cooler, free WiFi, and a Smart TV to keep things comfortable. A dedicated private bathroom just a short walk from the tent. Guests can also add a private hot tub, which doubles as a small pool in the summertime.

There’s plenty to do on-site at Peace River Oaks. Play lawn games, rent an ATV, canoe the Peace River, or hunt for fossils and shark teeth. On weekends, guests can also enjoy hayrides, live music, catered BBQ, and movies under the stars.

Flamingo Everglades Lodge in Everglades National Park

Vacation in “America’s Crocodile Capital”: Flamingo, located inside Everglades National Park. This remote outpost is about an hour from downtown Homestead and under two hours from Miami, making it one of the most unique getaways in the state.

The newly reopened Flamingo Everglades Lodge, rebuilt after hurricane damage several years ago, features 24 elevated rooms made from shipping containers. Options include cozy studios, one- and two-bedroom suites, and ADA-accessible rooms. Each room includes a kitchenette stocked with silverware, plates, and other basics, which makes longer stays easy.

Flamingo is well known for its mosquito population, so the Lodge offers a comfortable retreat, especially during warmer months. Houseboats and glamping tents are also available for those who want a more immersive experience.

While you’re here, take advantage of the unique activities in this part of the Everglades. Options include backcountry and Florida Bay eco tours, kayaking, and programs through the Everglades Institute, such as wet walks and trips to remote Cape Sable, depending on the time of year.

PaddleTail Waterfront Lodge in Crystal River

Winter in Florida means manatee season, and Crystal River is known as the “Manatee Capital of the World.” PaddleTail Waterfront Lodge sits right on Kings Bay and calls itself a “Stay N’ Play headquarters,” which fits given how easy it is to get on the water.

You can book manatee tours, kayaking, and boat rentals through Paddletail Waterfront Adventures, located in the on-site dive shop. You don’t have to stay at the lodge to book tours, but guests can take advantage of discounted stay-and-play packages.

The Manatee Swim Tour is the most popular experience. Guests are provided with 5-millimeter wetsuits and paired with an in-water guide to help with passive observation of the manatees. When the tour wraps up, it’s an easy walk back to your room to warm up, no car required.

Outside of manatee season, the lodge is still a solid option. During the summer months, scalloping tours run directly from the property, making it easy to enjoy Crystal River’s “underwater Easter egg hunt.”
