Six Ways to Experience Lake County This Winter

Switch up your scenery this winter and head to the rolling hills, citrus groves, and lakes of Lake County. Just outside of Orlando, this Lakeside Escape is especially charming when there’s a chill in the air. Here are six ways to make the most of Winter in Lake County.

1. U-Pick Citrus at Yummi Harvest in Lady Lake

At Yummi Harvest, visitors can pick fresh Hamlin oranges, a sweet variety known for its high juice content and vitamin C. U-pick season typically runs from December through March, so be sure to plan a visit while citrus season is in full swing.

After exploring the groves, say hi to the goats, then grab freshly squeezed juice, microgreens, or wheatgrass at checkout.

2. Visit Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards in Clermont

A visit to Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards, the largest winery in Florida, is a popular stop while exploring Lake County. Guided tours and tastings are offered seven days a week.

The experience includes a look inside the winemaking area, sweeping views of the vineyards, and a tasting featuring a range of award-winning wines, from dry to sweet.

3. Tour The Howey Mansion in Howey-in-the-Hills

Howey-in-the-Hills is a charming small town on the shores of Little Lake Harris. While you’re there, be sure to tour The Howey Mansion, built in the 1920s by town founder and citrus grower William J. Howey.

After sitting vacant for nearly a decade, the property was carefully restored and is now one of Central Florida’s most sought-after wedding and event venues. The guided historic tour lasts just over an hour and includes all 24 rooms of the mansion.

4. Enjoy Parks and Nature in Howey-in-the-Hills

Lake County is known for its abundance of parks, and Howey-in-the-Hills is home to several small, scenic spots worth exploring. Griffin Park sits along the shoreline of Little Lake Harris, with small piers where visitors can relax and enjoy the lake views.

Nearby, Sara Maude Mason Nature Preserve is popular for its peaceful boardwalk through the wetlands, which leads to an observation deck overlooking the lake.

5. Dine at JB Boondock’s Bar & Grill

JB Boondock’s Bar & Grill is a former Howey-in-the-Hills fish camp turned local favorite for laid-back waterfront dining. It’s accessible by car, boat, or even seaplane, with both indoor and outdoor seating overlooking Little Lake Harris.

The Boondock Burger, topped with melted bleu cheese and French-fried onion strings, comes highly recommended and doesn’t disappoint!

6. Stay at Mission Resort + Club

Located in Howey-in-the-Hills, Mission Resort + Club is one of the area’s most well-known resorts. The historic property has two golf courses, multiple restaurants, a spa, pickleball and tennis courts, and an outdoor pool.

In 2025, the resort completed a sweeping upgrade to all guest rooms and suites. Its signature restaurant, Conquistador Bar & Restaurant, also debuted a refreshed look and a new menu.
