10 State Parks to Visit Near Tampa (Summer 2025 List)
Summer break is here, and the heat doesn’t have to hold you back! These ten state parks, all within 90 minutes of Tampa, offer the perfect blend of nature, history, and cool ways to explore the outdoors.
#1: Weeki Wachee Springs State Park
📍 6131 Commercial Way, Spring Hill, FL 34606
Perfect if you’re looking for: A crystal-clear paddle through one of Florida’s most iconic spring runs. The Weeki Wachee River is stunning year-round, with water so clear you’ll see fish, turtles, and maybe even a manatee (depending on the season). Reservations are required for paddling from the state park, and spots fill quickly—so plan ahead!
#2: Egmont Key State Park
📍 3500 Pinellas Bayway S, St. Petersburg, FL 33715 (Ferry address)
Perfect if you’re looking for: A remote beach escape that feels like a true getaway. Accessible only by boat, Egmont Key sits at the mouth of Tampa Bay and has no facilities—so plan ahead! Book a ride with Hubbard’s Marina Ferry from the Fort De Soto Boat Ramp for the easiest route.
#3: Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park
📍 8737 US-19, Port Richey, FL 34668
Perfect if you’re looking for: A peaceful paddle through mangroves and springs in Pasco County. The park protects four miles of coastline and is home to manatees, dolphins, otters, and gators. You can rent kayaks directly through (my business!), Salty Dog Kayak Rentals, located inside the park.
#4: Anclote Key Preserve State Park
📍 776 Dodecanese Blvd, Tarpon Springs, FL 34689 (Ferry address)
Perfect if you’re looking for: A scenic boat ride followed by shelling on a secluded island state park. Odyssey Cruises offers a narrated trip from the Anclote River out to Anclote Key, where you’ll get to explore the beach and take in lighthouse views. Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins along the way!
#5: Myakka River State Park
📍 13208 State Road 72, Sarasota, FL 34241
Perfect if you’re looking for: Classic Florida wilderness with towering oaks and alligator sightings. This park is especially beautiful in the summer thanks to its shaded canopy. Don’t miss the recently reopened Canopy Walkway and tower for panoramic views from 74 feet up.
#6: Hillsborough River State Park
📍 15402 US-301, Thonotosassa, FL 33592
Perfect if you’re looking for: A close-to-home hike with lush scenery and a touch of adrenaline. The park’s suspension bridge sways as you cross, and its class II river rapids are rare for Florida. Hike the Rapids Trail (parking lot 2 is your best bet) or paddle with rentals from FloVibez.
#7: Honeymoon Island State Park
📍 1 Causeway Blvd, Dunedin, FL 34698
Perfect if you’re looking for: An easy beach day with Gulf views and fiery sunsets. A local favorite, Honeymoon Island has wide beaches, umbrella rentals, and a laid-back vibe. Some restrooms are under repair, so check the park’s page before visiting.
#8: Little Manatee River State Park
📍 215 Lightfoot Road, Wimauma, FL 33598
Perfect if you’re looking for: A hidden gem with a great hike and river access. The 4.5-mile river is ideal for paddling, but the 6.5-mile north loop trail is a standout for hikers. Note: The trailhead is outside the main entrance at 17837 US-301. Call ahead to confirm trail conditions.

Perfect if you’re looking for: A hidden oasis just a few minutes from white sand beaches. Surrounded by suburban development, this park is vital scrub-jay habitat. You’ll find hiking trails, a swimming lake, and paddling along South Creek—all tucked inside this Sarasota County retreat.
