Wauchula Guide | Hardee County

It’s hard to find places in Florida that don’t feel like they’re bursting with people and new development. Wauchula, about an hour south of Lakeland, is a breath of fresh air and a step back into a simpler time. With a population of about 5,000, it’s the largest city in Hardee County and is known for its charming shops, hometown restaurants, and deep agricultural roots.

Have breakfast at Java Cafe

Start your day at a local favorite. Java Cafe is a cozy spot known for its breakfast menu and coffee selection. Expect friendly service and prices that might surprise you in the best way (breakfast burritos are $3.25!). Don’t forget to grab one of their homemade desserts on the way out to enjoy later.

Explore Main Street

After breakfast, take some time to explore Main Street. Locally owned shops like Classy Cactus Boutique, Ryver Revival, and Cat’s on Main are full of unique clothing and home goods.

You’ll also notice murals and public art throughout downtown. One of the newest additions is at the corner of W. Main Street and S. 7th Avenue and features sandhill cranes. It’s a nod to Wauchula’s name, which comes from a Miccosukee word meaning “call of the sandhill crane.”

Enjoy lunch or dinner at Giovanni’s Main Street Kitchen

One of the most popular spots in town for lunch and dinner is Giovanni’s Main Street Kitchen. Handmade pizzas and calzones are made fresh daily in its authentic wood burning brick oven.

You can sit inside, surrounded by quirky art, or enjoy the patio overlooking Main Street and Heritage Park.

Visit Solomon’s Castle

A short 30 minute drive from downtown Wauchula along quiet country roads will bring you to Solomon’s Castle, one of the most whimsical places in Florida.

Created by artist Howard Solomon, known as the “DaVinci of Debris,” the castle is covered in recycled aluminum printing plates and decorated with more than 80 interpretive stained glass windows and countless metal sculptures. You can see 80+ pieces of his work up close on a 45 minute guided tour.

After the tour, grab a bite at the world famous Boat in the Moat Restaurant. You can sit inside the boat or dine dockside under the beautiful oak trees.

Note: Cards are not accepted. Bring cash or check.
